BelBul quality label: strong recognition for Belgian winemakers

The Belgian wine sector launched “BelBul”, the first-ever quality label for Belgian sparkling wines, on 12 May 2025. The label guarantees excellence in the production of Belgian sparkling wines according to the “méthode traditionnelle” and puts Belgium even more on the map as a high-quality bubbly country. From now on, Belgians no longer need to order cava, prosecco or champagne, but a coupe BelBul!

‘The BelBul label is not only a recognition of our efforts but also an incentive to keep raising the bar,’ Martin Bacquaert

From where does the name 'BelBul' come from?

The name BelBul did not come about by accident. Belgian winemakers were regularly confronted with the question, ‘Do you still have a bottle of cava?’ While Belgian bubbles have nothing to do with cava, champagne or prosecco, there appeared to be a need for a clear, recognisable name for home-grown sparkling wine.

From that need came BelBul, a multi-layered contraction:

  • Bel refers to bubbles in Dutch
  • Bul is a nod to French bulles
  • Phonologically, it sounds like Belles Bulles (beautiful bubbles) to French speakers
  • And finally, Bel also stands as an abbreviation for Belgium in both national languages
‘We are delighted that Belgian bubbles are now being carried nationally as fully-fledged ambassadors of local quality.’ Martin Bacquaert

BelBul: Quality guarantee for Belgian bubbles

With the launch of BelBul, initiated by the non-profit organisation Belgian Winegrowers - Flanders and the Association des Vignerons Belges - Wallonie, Belgian sparkling wine will have an official quality label as well as a generic name. This label sets strict criteria for origin, production methods and quality, offering consumers the assurance that they are holding a Belgian sparkling wine of exceptional quality. Producers who meet BelBul's high standards can count on extra visibility and recognition, both nationally and internationally.

Belgian sparkling wine is eligible for the BelBul label. Winemakers wishing to obtain the label must meet strict criteria that guarantee the quality and authenticity of Belgian sparkling wines:

  • The sparkling wines must have been produced according to the traditional method and comply with the applicable conditions and characteristics defined in the sparkling wine product specifications, drawn up by the competent Region
  • The wines must be accredited as PDOs (Protected Designation of Origin) or AOPs (Appelations d'Origine Protégée) by the recognition committee The wines must be 100% Belgian, meaning that both cultivation and vinification take place in Belgium.
  • Purchased grapes from abroad are not allowed
  • The winery is a family business; member of one of the two interest groups and shareholder of the CV Wine and Sparkling - Vin et Mousseux.
