On Wednesday, September 16, the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles took place in Moldova. A wine tasting event where wines from more than 50 different countries are judged by the most experienced and international oenologists, sommeliers, Masters of Wine, etc. Not a classic tasting, but a prestigious wine competition that enjoys worldwide recognition. The Concours Mondial de Bruxelles has been around for more than 30 years and is considered one of the most rigorously judged wine competitions in the world.
This edition of the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles focused on sparkling wines, a category in which Entre-Deux-Monts won no fewer than two Gold Medals. Both our Bacquaert Brut and Cuvée Jean magnum bottle were recognized by the international jury. The fact that these wines - with their rich family history - have won awards is a recognition of our daily commitment and years of perseverance.
Both the Bacquaert Brut and Cuvée Jean are complex and fairly powerful sparkling wines. They are characterized by a long maturation sur lattes (3 and +7 years respectively!) and contain reserve wine dating back to 2010 and even wood aging. The latter gives the wines a gastronomic character. This means that the wines can be served as reception bubbles, but also with a warm starter. Think of grilled scallops, oysters au gratin, and even white meat or veal. The aromas also pair well with bitter vegetables such as chicory, asparagus, and hop shoots.
Bacquaert Brut is a wine that we have been producing in Heuvelland for 10 years and bears our family name. It is a blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and 30% reserve wine. This wine bears the Entre-Deux-Monts stamp, but is mainly characterized by the Bacquaert family signature. It was Françoise Bacquaert, a relative of winemaker Martin, who developed ‘Champagne Bacquaert’ ten years ago in Damery, a village near Epernay in the Champagne region. Manager and winemaker Martin Bacquaert continued the family tradition of Bacquaert bubbles in Belgium and blended this gourmet sparkling wine.
The fact that our Cuvée Jean (100% Chardonnay) has also won awards is a direct ‘thank you’ to grandfather Jean Bacquaert. If we consider the start-up of the Entre-Deux-Monts wine estate, it can be said that the estate came into being thanks to the fields owned by grandfather Jean, the passion for wine that father Yves shares with everyone he loves, and the knowledge of current winemaker Martin Bacquaert, who makes Entre-Deux-Monts a success. A family story that has been given a golden touch with this gold medal at the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles. Grandfather Jean passed away in 2002 and never had the chance to walk among the vines of his grandson and godson Martin, knowing that our first vines were not planted until 2004.
Receiving two gold medals, specifically for the Bacquaert Brut and Cuvée Jean, which also carry the BelBul quality label, is a crowning achievement in our family history. We look back on the past with pride and are motivated for the future!
